Multi-Trip Insurance
If you are a person who travels a lot in a year, you must know it well that the more you are abroad the more the risk of unexpected troubles increases. Therefore, multi-trip travel insurance, or annual travel insurance is the right choice for you to get everything under control while you are away. This type of insurance is designed for businessmen, students (backpackers) or for those, who simply want to go on more than one holiday per year. It is very complex and flexible, as it provides a great variety of packages and coverage according to the different needs and types of travellers.

When you have decided to take an annual policy, you have to make some plans and do overall research to find out the best options and policies.
There are many things you should take into consideration: the length of your trip, if it is a journey abroad or just in your homeland, the average number of journeys per year, the possibilities of travelling in group or with your family as in this case you can have some discounts. Study carefully all the options, as there are similar insurance types, for backpackers, businessmen, student travelling policy (for studying and/or working abroad) and one of these may better suit your needs, especially if you have specific requirements.

Multi trip policies generally have day limits, 21-41-71 days per trip, this means the number of maximum days per journey in a year. Accordingly, prices can vary from company to company, but multi-trip insurance is always a better choice for frequent travellers, as it always implies significant discounts and bonuses. It is easy to find out the best offers, as you can make many simulations on the Internet. Accessing the websites of the insurers, you can get a quote by simply clicking at the respective buttons and selecting the options that will characterize your trip:
  • Type of the policy: single, annual multi-trip, backpacker (long stay), winter sport options, or dangerous sport option.

  • Destination: if you are travelling in Europe, US, or worldwide

  • The date of starting the policy

  • Trip limit: here you can select the number of days per trip

  • Number and type of persons: adults, children, students, family members

  • Optional activities like winter sports, this is however the part of the extra package (so-called premium)
A multi-trip insurance usually does not limit to the number of journeys you take in a year. Nor does it make any restrictions regarding the number of sports you can practice while being away. Always check the list of covered sports in the terms and condition section, so you can be fully prepared for any situation. Usually more than a hundred sports are covered in an average policy, but don't forget to update your contract or buy some extras if you decide to take part in winter sports or other dangerous adventures. Business trips are included in the standard policy with no extra cost as well.

Here are the most important issues a multi-trip policy should cover:
    1. Cancellation or curtailment of the journey: this means the holiday abandonment for some well justified reasons

    2. Medical expenses: rescue and emergency treatments, hospital ambulance, dental treatment and other types of medication. This also includes repatriation costs in case of death.

    3. Loss, damage, theft or delay of baggage and important documents (like passports, driving license, identity cards). In this case passports must be instantly replaced and the lost personal items, essential necessities are covered.

    4. Cash limit: in case your money is stolen or lost, you can have access to a pre-established amount of currency (notes and coins). But keep in mind: you should immediately report the theft or loss to the police in order to get a report with which you can justify your later claims.

    5. Personal liability: this covers all the property damages and bodily injuries you accidental cause to other people.

    6. Legal expenses. This includes the legal costs of any civil action for compensation, if someone causes you damage of property or bodily injury.

    7. A non-stop emergency assistance, and in some cases an instant medical-line.

    8. Coverage for certain sports and activities. A great number of sports are included in the standard policy.

    9. Optional package: you choose this if you are winter sports or adventure enthusiast and need an optional coverage for some dangerous sport (like off piste skiing, scuba-diving, bungee jumping).
The following items are usually included in the premium packages that is you have to pay an additional amount of money to get covered: expensive winter sports equipment (personal, or hired), piste and avalanche closure, business equipment (notebooks, cameras). Other things are entirely excluded from certain policies, and be well-informed regarding these, before buying the insurance. General exclusions include: war, acts of terrorism, pre-existing medical conditions (unless you buy an extra insurance), participation in dangerous sports and activities, your wilfully self-inflicted illness or injury, or attempt of suicide, unproved claims.

The great advantage of multi-trip insurance is that it allows you to make plans freely and more efficiently. If you decide to go somewhere for a weekend, you don't need to run after insurance and do a lot of administrative work, because you already have everything arranged with your annual policy.
